No Spend Month....the first week.

Our goal starting this week is for the whole family to spend $70 or less, which is about 20% of our month long budget.  Hubby got a $50 allowance for the week.  I got the remaining $20. Wish us luck.  Here we go!

Day 1:  I woke up this morning with that awesome feeling that comes with every new adventure.  That unwarranted pride and false sense of hope.  It is just like the first day on an awesome new diet that you just know is going to work.

For breakfast, we all had leftover cupcakes (I know, mother of the year).

Lunch and supper consisted of leftover party food.  (get ready to hear that a few more times)

Day 2:  Still feeling unwarranted accomplishment.  Energized and ready to do this!

For breakfast, the kids had scrambled eggs and fresh strawberries left from the monster party.  Eggs are always an awesome cheap/free option at our house because we own our own chickens.  Eggs are always just a chicken coop away.

I had a cup of coffee and a little fresh fruit.

I had to run a couple of errands today, but I stayed as close to home as possible to keep my gas consumption down.  I had to run to my daughter's school, the pharmacy, and the grocery store.  Of course, the grocery store means I had to spend a little of our budget.  Luckily all we needed was milk.  Unluckily, the milk cost $4, bringing us down to $66 left for the week, $16 left for me.  Technically, the milk was $4.28 after tax, but I had change rolling around in my wallet to cover the tax.  Is that cheating?

Side Note: I spoke to my friend in California today....apparently their milk only costs $2...super jealous.  I guess California really is where happy cows live.

For lunch, the kids grabbed some meat, cheese, crackers, and carrots while I had some carrots and celery and a turkey wrap.

Had to burn a teeny bit more gas bringing the star athlete to soccer practice.

Supper consisted of leftover croissant sandwiches from the birthday party with veggies, chips, and fruit as sides and cupcakes for dessert.

Day 3: Still feeling pretty great about our decision to have no spend month.  I know this feeling will be traded for misery and panic in a few weeks, but I'm enjoying it now.

Kids had cereal and fruit for breakfast while I had fruit and...you guessed it...coffee.

Lunch consisted of leftover croissant sandwiches, chips, and veggies. I think we MIGHT have bought a few too many.  Oh well, it is helping out with week one of no spend month.

Very near being burned at the stake, we had MORE leftover sandwiches for supper.  Last time, I promise!

The only gas I had to burn today was to go to a monthly training meeting for my personal business.  Since the gym is on the way home, I went by there so that they wouldn't forget my name.

Side note: I think I am going to quickly grow frustrated with how fast we burn through a gallon of milk around here...probably going to have to pick up another gallon tomorrow or Thursday.

Day 4: Found out hubby didn't fill the tank up before we started our adventure.  He had to drop $20 into his gas tank.  Looks like I'm "winning" for now.

Kids had toast with homemade jelly for breakfast.  I just grabbed a cup of coffee.

Lunch consisted of a box of organic mac n cheese shaped like bugs.  Had it lurking in the back of the pantry.  Ironically the organic mac n cheese is cheaper overall and per ounce than the blue box.

To avoid murder, I prepared chicken tortellini from supplies we had on hand.

I had to run into town for a business meeting, but had a friend headed the same place.  I just met her up the street and we rode together to the meeting as well as to the gym.

Day 5:  Still trying to be as on top of things as possible.  It has been kind of a rough day, so it is a little tough to be excited about sticking to the plan.

Breakfast for the kids was the last of the cereal.  I had....wait for it...coffee!

For lunch, we had cheese and crackers and apple slices.

Supper consisted of barbeque pork chops, whole kernel corn, and butterbeans...all of which we had stored up in the freezer.

Hubby had to stop on the way home to pick up more milk, so we took another $4.28 hit and are now  down to $41.72 for the week and 321.72 for the month.

Day 6: Still feeling pretty good about the no spending concept overall, but definitely ready for a weekend.

Breakfast was cheesy scrambled eggs for everyone.

Lunch was a box of jambalaya rice we had stored in the pantry.  My kids LOVE jambalaya without meat in it, so this was actually a nice treat for them.

For supper, we had leftover pork chops and veggies from the day before.

After supper, I had to run a few business related errands....my gas tank is in tears, but I got a lot accomplished.

Stopped by the store for bread, cereal, dry pinto beans, chicken, and refried beans.  Ended up spending $9.34 total.  That would have left us with $32.38 for the week, but hubby's group did their employee of the month event today, which set him back a whopping $20.  Still, we have 12.38 left!

Day 7: Feeling tired.  Glad it is the weekend for sure.

Breakfast was cereal.  After breakfast, the boys headed to work on vehicles while the girls hit the soccer fields.

Had to stop at the dollar store for a small pack of pullups.  They set us back $8.29, leaving us with a whole entire $4.09 left in our weekly budget!

Lunch consisted of cheese, crackers, and veggies.

For supper, we went over to my inlaws for catfish, potato salad, okra, and hushpuppies...mmmm...good food and good company.

WE SURVIVED OUR FIRST WEEK!

Not only did we survive, but we had $4.09 left in the budget despite hubby's rule breaking!  That gets me all pumped up and ready to go for another week.

Next week's budget is 25% of the monthly budget, which is $87.50.  I considered rolling the $4.09 into the next week, but I think I'll hang onto it in case we need it at the end.  I would hate to get the urge to splurge.

I cant wait to share our next update with you.  Hopefully the next time I post, we'll still be on track!

The Best Site For Couponing...EVER!

Ok, so this isn't really something that I personally do to be thrifty, but this IS something that is an AMAZING way to stay thrifty.  About a year and a half ago I stumbled across a website called SouthernSavers.com.  I fell in love immediately.  This girl is amazing.  She provides a preview every Wednesday of what the following week's coupons will be.  She also gives a list of what to buy at each store with what coupons to get the best price.

There is an area of her site called "Learn to Coupon" where she shares couponing tips, store coupon policies, charts with stock up prices on grocery items, weekly ad schedules, and price flow charts as well as ideas for organizing and using your coupons.

SouthernSavers provides an area linking you to any and all imaginable printable coupons.  This includes coupon sites, manufacturer sites, stores, and other resources.  You can typically print two per computer, so make sure you print from all the computers you own if it is a coupon you really like or can use multiples of.

Each major store in the southeast region is listed on the site.  When you click for each store, you see a list of sale items along with coupons to use and the price it brings the item down to.  For special deals, you will see a nut, notifying you to STOCK UP!  For some stores, she even provides purchase scenarios.  For example...at CVS, you earn points which result in money off your next purchase...she gives you a list of transactions to perform in order in such a way that you spend the very least out of pocket.  It is GENIOUS!

On the main page, there are links to the Sunday ads, but there is also a link to the Best Deals.  When you absolutely have to have an item that you don't have a coupon for, the Best Deals area gives you a list of where you can get the item for the best possible price without a coupon.

If all of that wasn't enough, she is constantly posting deals for online stores, special promotions, and giveaways.

I'm telling you....this site is GOLDEN!  It has been such a huge money saving resource for me.  We have a never ending supply of free or nearly free soap and toothpaste.  :o)

My favorite resource is the stock up price list.  I always find myself wondering what a good price really is.  This list solves all of those problems.  From the site, click Learn to Coupon, then it will be in the first section on the right.  Now I rarely pay too much for an item unless I just absolutely HAVE to have it right then...but part of the game is not to get in such a bind that you have to pay more than necessary.

I hope you find this site as wonderful as I have over the last year and a half.  I don't know what I would do without it sometimes.

Do you have another site that you use for your couponing?  Let me know about it...

DIY Coupon Binder...Keep Those Savings Organized

I have been keeping a coupon binder for about 18 months now.  I honestly go through spurts where I use it hot and heavy for a while and then taper off for a while.  I must admit that I am not a very dedicated couponer.  However, when I AM using my binder, I save considerable amounts of money.  I have had several inquiries in the past about my coupon binder, so here goes.

What you need:
1- 3 inch ring zip around binder
1 pack baseball card organizers
1 pack organizing tabs (large set....alphabetical or set that goes into the 20's)
sharp scissors
pen
coupons

Notes about supplies: I bought a cute purple zip around binder from CaseIt that has a long carrying strap.  If you plan to carry your coupon binder with you, this is ideal.  I got the alphabetized organizers so that I knew I would have enough tabs.  I bought baseball card organizers in a huge pack so that I would have extras if something happened to the ones I initally used.

Ok.  Now that you have what you need, we can get started.

Go ahead and open up your binder rings and start loading your baseball card organizers.  About every other to every three baseball card sheets, put in a dividing tab.  Continue this until you have all of your tab dividers loaded and a sufficient amount of baseball card organizers.

Now, you will label your index for your divider tabs.  You can customize this in any way you like, but here are the labels for mine:

Air Fresheners/Candles
Baby Items
Baking Needs
Beverages
Breads/Breakfast
Canned Goods
Condiments
Dairy
Dish Washing
Freezer
Grains/Side Items
Laundry
Meat
Medicine/First Aid
Oral Hygiene
Paper Goods/Food Storage
Pasta
Personal Hygiene
Produce
Refrigerated
Snacks/Cookies/Crackers
Soap
Surface Cleaners
Food Misc.
Household Misc.
Restaurants

That list seems to be the easiest for me to keep organized.  This is the third list I have been through...the first two failed miserably.  Just write in pencil and adjust your list as needed.

Once you have your index labeled, you can start adding coupons.  I find that the baseball card organizers are a great size for most coupons.  For coupons that are ridiculously huge, I fold them so that the product name and expiration date are visible.  If I have multiple coupons for the same product or multiple copies of the same coupon, I try to store them in the same pouch to save space.

Once you have your coupons in, it looks something like this.

Obviously turned to the condiments section. Sorry for all of the extra junk in the picture.  This was taken before I knew it would end up on a blog.  Extras in the picture are as follows: top center, my laptop; top right, my daughter's dance dvd; bottom center, my belly which was pregnant at the time with my youngest daughter...lol

If you purchased the CaseIt binder, you have a pocket in the front inside as well as a zipper pocket on the outside.

In my inside pocket, I keep a freebie coupon pouch that my mother in law got me from who knows where.  It is really adorable with pink and white zebra stripes.  I have it divided by store name.  I typically do not carry my entire binder with me.  I typically make a list and put my coupons into my smaller pouch to bring with me.  Some couponers would tell you to carry your entire binder in case there is a sale...I like to avoid the strange looks.

In my outside pocket, I keep a pen and a sharp pair of scissors. This just ensures that everything I need is all in one spot instead of having to go searching for the scissors when I get ready to clip and organize coupons.

Coupon Tips:

I recommend only clipping out coupons on items that you actually normally use.  This keeps me from spending money on something that we may not actually utilize just to say I "saved" money.  Don't fall into the trap of spending to save.

Unless you are just super ambitious and want to compare coupons to sales every week on your own, I recommend linking up with a website where someone has done the hard work for you.  My personal favorite is southernsavers.com.  She seriously does all of the hard work for you.  She matches up the coupons to in store sales and offers.  Also, she often posts special deals and offers.  Most common stores are listed here.  The ones that aren't will be your local mom n pop places.

Don't feel like you have to run around all over town to get the best deal.  Walmart ad matches as do many other stores.  Just save the sale papers from the store that your best deals are at and have them ad match....and then use your coupons on top of that to get the absolute best deal right where you already shop.

DO NOT become a shelf clearer.  The goal of couponing is not to end up on a television show.  It is to save money for your family.  If you absolutely NEED ten or more of an item, give the store a courtesy call so that they can have it ready for you instead of you clearing the shelves.

Don't be shy.  Share and trade your coupons with neighbors, friends, relatives, whomever.  If people around you know you are couponing, they are more than willing to hang onto inserts for you or trade out with you when you have both clipped everything you need.

That's it.  That's my coupon binder.  The most important thing is to periodically set aside time to go through and clear out any coupons that may have expired, moving the ones closest to expiry to the front of each pouch.

Do you have a coupon binder?  Do something different than me?  Want to share your own couponing tips?  Let me know about it!
